Downeyites - the former large home of Reno
Sirrine at the dead end of Garnish Drive at Gallatin Rd. was torn
down a long while back and the lot has stood vacant for years; it is
irregular, has 12 sides, is about 36,000 sqft., and sold for 0.5
million 10 yrs ago. Drove by recently and discovered a HUGE mansion's
being built on it. WOW. Hope that they have the funding to complete
it. There are plenty of home construction jobs which have been quite
idle for MANY months -- dating back to before things hit the

If
you've ever wanted to create and/or manipulate -.PDF files, then you
might consider "Nitro PDF Professional"; it seems to work
better than many at tinkering with the files and includes a pseudo
printer driver, so that you can specify it as your target printer and
thus save the printout from (almost) any program as a file in PDF. It
will even drive your scanner to gather multiple pages into one file;
dunno how it would handle one with an AutoDocFeeder, as I don't have
one.
The price may be high, but there are sometimes bargain sales

Recently
I heard someone say the word "impossible" and it sorta
resonated with me to the extent that I see/hear YulBrynner in my mind
standing tall and saying it in song in "The King and I",
but the only references that I can find point to the FairyGodmother

Would appreciate any help in reconciling this
conflict: e.g., (1) Yul says a different word with similar emphasis,
(2) Yul says it, but I just can't find it, (3) I'm simply mistaken

appreciated in ...
A. NOT sending any messages, except small
ones of the GREATEST importance.
B. understanding that any

Not
all PDF viewers are created equal ...
.- some are slow -
eg. like Adobe
.- some are faster - eg. FoxIt
.- some have more features - eg. Nitro-Professional
.- some
have a hard time enabling FINDing and/or highlight/copying text.
.- some will not allow certain documents to be nicely printed
If
at first one won't perform a needed task, then try another.
Maybe
I'm nearly the last to discover this, but it IS possible to search
for text in all the -.PDF files on a drive or in a sub-directory by
using the "Find" feature in Adobe Reader. Just use the drop
down menu adjacent to the "Find" field and select "Full
Reader Search" (Shift+Ctrl+F), then specify the drive or browse
to a folder.

Also,
running SPYBOT and ADAWARE could help.
Ever since
Windows-Vista was released, it seems to have been met with more
negative discussion than I can ever recall about such an item; so
much in fact that some new PCs are now optionally available with the
prior version installed, ie. Win-XP, just to avoid the problems with
Vista. Apparently from what I hear, the hardware drivers for all
peripheral gear need to be upgraded and many are NOT available.
Microsoft is not admitting to anything, but there is another new
version rumored to be coming out sooner than usual (Win-7, formerly
codenamed Blackcomb and Vienna).
It seems that with each release,
there are MANY added features -- most of which are wanted only by a
small percentage of users, and with them comes a vast assortment of
problems which impact features in the prior release on which many
users were dependent. Interestingly, there is a new book out entitled
"Windows Vista Annoyances". It has a lot of good advice
about Vista and makes good reading even if you have XP.
There is
some good discussion in its performance chapter (ch.6) about
hard-drive management, replacement, and partitioning. My favorite
part is where is says "the only way .. was to use .. Partition
Magic, but Symantec bought (it) and ruined it, the best choice is now
Acronis ...". Which essentially indicates that there are other
software companies which make mistakes too. Personally, I loved
Partition Magic and thought that I was perhaps in a minority when I
tried to use the latest release and failed to find its previously
friendly user interface; now my choice is the prior version.
Symantec's primary offering of the Norton products seems to now come
in more flavors than Baskins-Robbins and gets similar negative
comments on bulletin boards -- especially relative to its impact on
systems (because of excessive resource consumption) and difficulty in
disabling/re-enabling and uninstalling.
Recommendations:
.-
Steer clear of Vista if you can.
.- If you can't, then get the
HomePremium or (preferrably) Business version,
and the book mentioned above (and check your local library for many
others).
.- Steer clear of Symantec, especially their internet
security packages;
there are
plenty of others out there, some are free, some are cheap,
some are not very useful; be careful. Consider the reviews at

It seems soooo much better engineered, more user-friendly and intuitive than any other free email servers, but recently my faith was shaken a bit. Although I seldom access my G-mail via a POP3 server connection, when I recently attempted to do so, then GMAIL gave an error message that my username and password could not be processed. But it had worked many times in the past and was still accessible via a web browser. Eventually this was traced to GMAIL's having locked my POP3 access and was now requiring special effort to get it UNlocked, even though there was NO evidence of this condition in any of the displays via the web relative to the management and settings of my account. Our group at Rockwell used to make the comment about a couple of our internal customers that whenever they described a problem, the only thing that was clear was that there was a problem of some kind, somewhere, at some point in time and we had to actually sort thru all of their gobblety-gook to learn the real specifics of the actual problem before we could take care of the situation. Based on the clarity of error messages respecting PCs and the Web, those two guys must have found a second calling. But I still recommend GMAIL. The FBI will NOT email you, no matter what, but there must be enough fools who fall for big scams/spams/spoofs to make it profitable for frauds to bother sending stuff like the one described at ... http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977606501&grpId=3659174697241980&nav=Groupspace&memberId=21742 Some interesting info about almost any drug might be found at ... http://www.consumerreports.org/health/best-buy-drugs/reports-by-drugNames.htm thanks, Don. There
seem to be two sides to the global warming "facts", but one
thing is for sure: as you drive faster on the highway, your kinetic
energy is exponentially greater; at 2-times the speed, the energy is
4-times as great. The only place that the energy goes when you stop
is into heat, either the air, the tires on the road, or the brakes
pads on the drums/rotors. Going slower consumes less fuel, generates
less heat, and causes less anxiety; it's a win-win situation, but
watch out for that BIG TRUCK.

would
sure like to know the whys, wherefores, and purposes of many of
them
Just recently observed that HP is now offering some of
its paper wrapped at 750 sheets per package instead of the usual 500
sheets (an increase of 50%) and put-up at 6 packages per case instead
of the usual 10 (a decrease of 40%). You do the math, but this
figures to 4500 sheets instead of the usual 5000 (10% less) per case.
And they are advertised as 50% more free, with a note to RUSH to the
store floor. Guess it's just a sign of the times, with merchandising
trying to triumph over consumers to manifest Barnum's old adage about
the fool born every minute. Caveat emptor. After years of success at
ripping off the consumers with cheap printers and expensive
consumables, this is another tack.

On
some versions of some operating systems on some computers, NOT all
USB ports are equally useful for all intents and purposes, even if
all are rated for the same speed.
Case in point: If the Linksys
WUSB54G wireless USB adapter support software is installed and the
unit plugged into one of the USB ports, then the adapter will not
necessarily operate properly if it is moved to another USB port.
Even
though the DeviceManager|(device)|Properties|General may say that
"This device is working properly", it still may be
NON-operational.
The only cure know at this time is to UNinstall
and REinstall the software.
Then the unit will operate in the new
port which is used first, but not in any of the others.
Would
appreciate learning any other schemes to allow port changing without
UN-/RE-installing the software.

BE
AWARE - Have heard about some PC connectable devices with pre-loaded
viruses, but just stumbled upon something almost as sinister.
Bought
a NEW SanDisk USB thumb-drive/memory-stick. It came with a "feature"
for password protection (called U3). When first inserted, then it
immediately caused some files to be added to the system WITHOUT EVER
ASKING FOR PERMISSION.
Then it appeared to add TWO(2) lettered
drives to my system - neither of them were useful; when I removed the
stick, then I got the blue-screen-of-death (BSOD), whereupon I
restored my system to the prior day's checkpoint.
When I returned
the device to Staples, then technician seemed to know about this
"feature"'s installing software and suggested that my
system was buggy; but I was cooperatively given a refund.
My
position is that SanDisk's code should have asked wether I wanted any
of the device's special "features" before installing
them.
Apparently, if a PC system can tolerate/accommodate the
device, then it still takes up 2 drive letters.
CAUTIONS:
.-
Before using any new software or hardware, be sure to establish a
restore point; I was just dumb-lucky.
.- Be aware of the potential
for such plugin device's automatically installing things that you
might not want.

Most of our Canadian friends do not like their medical
care at all. Waits can be as much as three years for many

was being sent to Sudbury, about three hrs East of here twice a week
with an overnight each time for some dermititus condition that was
eventually solved in two visits to a Dr. in Potosky, MI. ""
