Rather than re-distribute ever piece of goodies that comes my way which would take a lot of time and space on the Net and possibly bore some, now I try to find each of them out there someplace on the giant WEB and include their URLs in these monthy messages so everyone can select those specific ones which sound like they might be of interest.
My apologies for some of the links' no-longer being hot (you'll need to copy & paste) and for the need to scroll to the right for some UN-folded text.

The current state of computer system diagnostic error messages is such that there may be 4 legitimate reasons for a user to get the same error message, and each time that that message is given, then there may have been any of 13 actual stimulating causes. In a recent experience, I got a message box stating "Authorization Required" by a WebSite and blank fields provided to fill-in an I.D. and password. This happened for EVERY attempt to access ANY WebSite. The actual cause was that the iPad being used was connected to a range extender that was extending the range of a wireless router that was not broadcasting; no communication ever got to the modem, much less to the WebSite identified in the message box as requiring "Authorization". All a user really knows when an error message is given, is that there is an error of some kind somewhere in the system; the wording may totally belie the actual cause.

New word for the New Year- - -

Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc'-Ra-cy) - A system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

HELP- Vividly recall from an early 1960s performance at the Hollywood Bowl with a spotlight on a vacant piano, that the orchestra played a piece from the score of a then-recent movie, which score had been written by a famous composer who had died just before the movie was released. Believe that the movie was filmed in wide-screen Todd/AO, but not sure. Sorta thought maybe it was done by one of the Bernsteins, but they both died much later.
Would appreciate any help recalling the movie or the composer.

Am sure that all of you who watched the Times Square ball drop wondered about the geometry of the ball and its triangular glass inserts. So here it is ...
1  Ball is based on the basic geometry of a soccer ball
  12 each  5-sided pentagons
  20 each  6-sided hexagons
2 each  hexagons removed for the support spindle
  18 each  hexagons remaining
60  (12x5) BIG triangles form the pentagons
108  (18x6) BIG triangles form the hexagons
 168 total BIG triangles
672  (168x4)  small triangles form the BIG   triangles
2688  (672x4) teensy triangles form the small triangles
There were two different sizes and shapes, and Waterford made all of them.

The street maps from AAA are wonderful for using while on the road; they are in HIGH contrast, in very few colors, and can be read easily while driving. They can even be copied on Black & White printers and are still very useful.
ALL of the online map sources of which I am aware yield products which are quite useless while driving. They dwell in pastel colors and the streets are all in outline format rather than in single line format. They are cute for online reference, but printing them in Black & White renders them useless as driving references.
Would appreciate any leads to AAA-style online maps that can be printed B&W and be more useful while driving.

2013.07 July ** Hurrah for the 4-th of July

DUHSers, all:
On a sorrowful note - Suzanne Young Walter Knoepfle (DUHS'51) passed away on June 18, 2013.  She had been diagnosed with cancer of the brain/lungs about two/three weeks prior.

Bill Sexton has suffered a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) or Mini Stroke.
His left side has been impacted, and he's now on stronger and more-expensive aspirin (Eliquis), but he's getting along ok.

Downey History Buffs:
The Downey Historical Society recently interviewed me on tape for my Remembrances of Downey.    http://www.citrusresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/CitroSep-Oct.pdf
Which lead me to several other "discoveries" ...
 KFI stood for "Farmers Information";
it was owned by Earl C. Anthony the long-time L.A. Packard car dealer.
       who also owned KECA.
KHJ had been touted as standing for "Kaiser, Henry J."
    and also for "Kindness, Happiness, and Joy";
ACTUALLY they were random letters selected by the U.S.Commerce Dept.

The equals sign, was invented in 1557 by Robert Recorde (ca. 15121558 - a Welsh physician and mathematician) because he reckoned that "no two things can be more equal".
Someone of similar stature and renown, in the same era, made the observation that any problem or situation could be analyzed much better if numerical values were assigned to its properties, i.e. if it could be expressed in numbers.

Most news broadcasts have "teaser" pieces just before the breaks to get you to listen to the commercials. Some broadcasts leave the teased item to the very last, and even then it usually is not worth the wait. Barnum said that "there's fool born every minute". Thoughts and recommendations appreciated.

Would appreciate anyone's shedding light on the location of the scene seen in the image at ...
   http://heap.popcornpot.com/STILLS/PLACES1/NYC12A.jpg
Have been told that it is from NYC/Brooklyn across the East River, but best that I can reconstruct from a map, it would be around 50th Ave. and 2nd St. near Hunter's Point South Park and Gantry Plaza State Park in Brooklyn; HOWEVER none of the maps show any bridge superstructure in that area -- but rather only the Queens Midtown Tunnel. Perhaps the well-trained eye can identify the bridge tower. Help solicited.
