Vikings All:
The 2001 Centennial Edition of the Volsung, the Downey High School Annual Yearbook, is available for purchase by Alumni.
In addition to the traditional Yearbook features detailing the graduating class of 2001 and the activities of the past year, this publication will present a brief history of the School with many pictures from prior yearbooks and scenes of the School facilities from over the past 100 years.
The price is $55.00; shipping is FREE. Checks should be made-out to Downey High School and mailed to Centennial Yearbook, c/o Mr. Mark Child, Downey High School, 11040 Brookshire Ave., Downey, Ca. 90241. For further information or to make purchases directly in person contact Mr. Child or the School office at 562/869-7301.
The Journalism Department's archive is missing volumes of the Volsung from the years of 1941 thru 1946 and would appreciate the donation of any that might be available from alumni, family, and friends from that era.

The School opened its doors as the Los Nietos Valley Union High School in September of 1901 and graduated its first class in 1904. Over those years it has graduated 57,620 students and had name changes to Downey Union High School, Downey Senior High School, and Downey High School. Recently it kicked-off its centennial celebration on Friday June 1 with a concert on the lawn of the Carpenter-Rally stage, featuring the Hodads, and will have other events over the next several months. All alumni are encouraged to make sure that the School has their correct address information on file so that they can be contacted by their respective class's reunion committees as such events may arise. Alumni may submit their graduating-class-year, name (both when in school and present), current address, phone number, and InterNet E-Mail address to Alumni Office, Downey High School, 11040 Brookshire Ave., Downey, Ca. 90241 or via E-Mail to ...

Vikings All:
The School's WebSite has a few new pages of CAMPUS SCENES; do take a peek at ... http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/allclass/L2camp01.htm Having been told that there would be mention of the event in today's weekly local newspaper, I scoured it as soon as it hit my driveway but found nothing, even after 2 re-readings. Six-hours later my wife mentioned it, so ... For all of those of you who do or don't read the Downey Eagle, whether in print or online at www.downeyeagle.com, you, too, may miss this item which appears only as a caption on a photo of the "Hodads" on page 1. It reads... "Downey High Event - On Friday 1 June Downey High School will offer a family picnic and concert at the campus Carpenter-Alumni Stage. The event is free starting at 6:00pm. It will celebrate the 100-th anniversdayr of the founding of the High School, which began in a small school house across the street on what is now Brookshire, but was then known as Church Street. It opened its doors in 1901, but the first class did not graduate until 1904. Entertainment at the June 1 event will be by the "Hodads" who have opened for the "Beach Boys", Jay Leno, Vince Gill, Sergio Mendes, and Brazil 2000. Dancing is permitted. Bring a picnic basket and a blanket." Personally, I'd imagine that lawn chairs would be permitted for those who can no longer sit crosslegged on the ground, and I'd recommend a light wrap. Have NO idea what sort of other items might be on the program/adgenda for the evening. Hope to see lots of you there. For any of you who might be looking for me, I'll likely be wearing cargo pants, ear plugs, and a weird hat. My understanding is that there will be a second event of some sort after the new school year opens in the fall of this year. More details later as I learn of them. Pictures of the Centennial Background of the Alumni/Rally Stage, a sample of the BRICK work, and a few others can be found at ... http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/allclass/L2camp01.htm If you'd like to support the project and have your very own BRICK, then contact the Principal, Allen Layne, at ... alayne@dusd.net or fill-in the form at ... http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/allclass/cmpsbk0b.jpg Thanks,, /s/ Hugh
