Vikings All:
Some stuff here of interest to my Class-of-'53 and others, too.
At LONG LAST the School's WebSite has been fixed - sorta.
The way that it was fixed was to remove nearly all of the old area known as ...
http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalum53/
and replaced it with ...
http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/
so DO DO DO change your bookmark if you had one.
If you're new to the Site, please DO look around.
If you've been there before, there are some new things,
e.g. some mementos from Gary Garett of our class'53 and his mom's class'32 can now be seen at ..
http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/ + class mementos / memorabilia
ALSO please try all kinds of links and let me know if any are "broken".
(EXCEPT for my "Links for a Rainy Day", for which there is NO warrantee)
----
If there was something that I promised to do for anybody after the School's site got back in order, then
please check to see that I've done it and let me know if I still have errors or omissions or owe you something yet.
Several of you have identified corrections to the Elementary Class photos at ...
http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/L2elempx.htm
and I believe that I've made them all; please nudge me if I've missed any.
Thanks to Richard McGuire. we have a NEW picture of Mrs.Stannard's 6-th grade class linked to from that page via ...
DowneyElem Grade 6 Room D
which becomes ...
http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/eled06df.htm
-----
NEW FEATURE ADDED --
Instead of hoping that everybody remembers all prior emails and stuff or where they were filed,
there will now be a running list of the salient pieces --
BOTH for all classes in General at ...
http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni + MultiClass + Running Notes
which goes to ...
http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/allclass/L2run02a.htm
AND for the Class of '53 specifically at ...
http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/ + Running Notes
which goes to ...
http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/L2run02s.htm
Check 'em out, it's my first attempt at reference linkss internal to a file.
The files can either be browse/scrolled lineraly or linked-to by date/subject.
-----
The latest lists of our class of '53 are at ...
http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/duhs53.htm full
and http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/duhs53uu.htm lost
---
The Class-'53 Reunion Committee Chair/Steers is now also considering places other than the Queen Mary -- specifically Angelo's and Vinci's in Fullerton near intersection of Harbor and Chapman.
As always, send your ideas, preferrences, and comments on all facets (location, food, music, date, time, dress, program, books, video) of the reunion gathering to him at ...
"Rogers,Ben"
ALSO send him your WILLINGNESS to participate on the Committee; this is IMPORTANT.
----
The pictures of the '53 Senior class and the Elementary classes have been RE-UP-loaded to the site and the name/legends have been UP-dated (HOPEFULLY) according to the latest info/changes that I've received. So PLEASE do look over all of the links from the page at ...
http://downey.dusd.net/~dhsalumni53/L2pictur.htm
and let me know of any UP-dates that STILL need to be made.
Our Henry "Orlan" Mitchell has been the biggest contributor of corrections, for which we thank him and hope that he'll double-check my work.

The following recently in from Ron Welch's wife ...
> > While waiting for my first appointment in the reception room of a
> > new dentist, I noticed his certificate, which bore his full name.
> > Suddenly, I remembered that a tall, handsome boy with the same name
> > had been in my high school class some 50 years ago. Upon seeing him,
> > however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, gray-haired
> > man with the deeply lined face was too old to have been my classmate.
> > After he had examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended the local
> > high school. "Yes," he replied.
> > "When did you graduate?" I asked. He answered, "In 1951."
> > "Why, you were in my class!" I exclaimed.
> > He looked at me closely and then asked,
> > "What did you teach?"
This is a great twist and at first I thought that it was a first-person story from Patty, but then realized that it's been forwarded a few times.

In Dec 2001, there was a reception given by the Sowney Symphony Society honoring two long-standing memebrs, one of whom was one of our English teachers. See at

Follow-up Thoughts from the 14 March 2002 Meeting of the DUHS'52 Steering Committee ...
1. Newspaper -
Notify the Downey Eagle (or it's successor after it changes hands), the Long Beach Press-Telegram (they have a column/section that appears on a regular basis), the LA-TImes, and the Orange County Register.
The latter is not very cooperative regarding schools that are not in O.C., so you might put in a cover letter mentioning that the majority of the class members now live IN Orange County and read the Register.
2. Picnic -
The next day after the dinner at the Embassy, have a NO-host picnic on the School grounds - bring-your-own-everything affair with NO fees, food, or reservations. Contact the School well in advance, likely they will be quite cooperative.
3. Teachers -
The only ones I know that are still living in the SouthWest are Mrs. Walta (Downey) and DeanKrebs(Arizona); I can get you addr and ph.numbers if you want.
4. Video header -
Suggest that someone take a camcorder onto the current School campus during some empty/idle time (e.g. weekend) and narrate scenes of the bell, the mosais, the new rally stage (in place of the old pool), the Viking art on the buildings, the office building (the William L. Walker Hall). Then this can be edited/copied ahead of the party-time footage that I'll take.
5. For those who won't/can't come -
a. Request/beg photos from them for inclusion in the book; ask for head-shot/portrait/pass-port type photos.
b. Offer copies of the book and the video tape for a fee.
6. Food Selection -
The class-of-'51 offered a selection (by ADVANCE reservation) of beef or chicken on the QueenMary. Many of those who choose beef wished that they had chosen chicken.
7. Data Available -
I'll be sending a CD of pics of class-53 and entire School address list (in several forms and sorts to Mariella and Georgia.
8. Program -
Gotta give a BIG recognition to Bill Gast for his really big effort on the WebSite.
Rather than Prizes, give recognition live and in the printed-Program to those with the greatest/shortest travel distance, most kids, least hair, etc. etc.; would HAVE to have the members apply IN ADVANCE for the recognition, so that it could be printed in the program and the memory book.
9. Souvenir Books -
Some Commercial outfits who will do all sorts of things; smaller ones likely more cooperative for doing whatever you might want them to do.

The daily Long Beach Press-Telegram recently stated that a new newspaper, The Downey Patriot, will commence publishing tomorrow, Friday 3 May 2002. There is no InterNet WebSite as of the present time; as soon as I learn if they have one, I'll pass it along.

====== OTHER STUFF ============
-- Viruses and DSL --
Have heard recently about some concerns of whether or not to get DSL (or any other high-speed/non-dialup) connections due to fears regarding viruses.
Viruses are not more likely to hit you just because you have DSL, so they should not be any consideration as to whether or not to use DSL, but ...
Some advice about DSL --
.. being "on" longer with the same address makes you more vulnerable to hackings from others attempting to take over your computer -- NOT just by sending you viruses, but by taking control of your system.
.. to help prevent these things, a FIREWALL is a MUST.
.. instead, better even to get a Router between your PC and your modem; these are often used to service multiple PCs on the same modem, but they work fine with just one PC. In this usage, a Hub is NOT sufficient, but a Router will do a great job at hacker prevention.
All of this applies to DSL and any other high-speed/non-dialup connection.
-- Wills and Trusts --
Also heard recently about a widow who is being forced to sell her house and divide the proceeds between herself and the children which her husband of 30 years had in a prior marriage. This was because he left no will and her name was not on the deed.
Often we don't want to face our own mortality, but the time will come and the wisest know not how soon when we or our families will have to face such times.
DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU. All should be urged to seek professional legal advice to adjust deeds, write wills, and/or create trusts -- whether it's for those you will leave (spouse or children), or for those (spouses or parents) who will leave to you. In California and many other States, "Revocable Living Trusts" can make transitions very smooooooth.

On Seniors, from -- http://www.seniorscorner.org/old.html
Does this sound familiar?
YES, I AM a Senior Citizen --
I'm the life of the party .. even when it lasts 'till 8 p.m.
I'm very good at opening child-proof caps .. with a hammer.
I'm usually interested in going home before I get to where I'm going.
I'm good on a trip for at least an hour without my aspirin, antacid.
I'm the first one to find the bathroom wherever I go.
I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up.
I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a word you're saying.
I'm very good at telling stories..over & over & over & over & over--
I'm aware that other people's grandchildren are not as bright as mine.
I'm so cared for; long-term care, eye care, private care, dental care.
I'm not grouchy, I just don't like traffic, waiting, crowds, politicians...
I'm sure everything I can't find is in a secure place.
I'm wrinkled, saggy and lumpy, and that's just my left leg.
I'm having trouble remembering simple words like... uh....
I'm a walking storeroom of facts...I've just lost the storeroom.
I'm realizing that aging is not for sissies.
I'm walking more (to the bathroom) and enjoying it less.
I'm sure they are making adults much younger these days.
I'm in the *initial* state of my golden years: SS, CD's, IRA's, AARP
I'm wondering if you're only as old as you feel.. Am I 150?
I'm anti-everything: anti-fat, anti-smoke, anti-inflammatory....
I'm supporting all movements.. by eating bran, prunes & raisins.
I'm a Senior Citizen and I think I am having the time of my life.
Do I have Alzheimer's? I don't remember. But, I'm happy, I think!
One good thing - I'm always meeting new people.
-----
WHO'S RESPONSIBLE?
Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every
conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or
imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have
done and do not blame others. BUT, upon reflection, we
would like to point out that it was NOT the seniors who took:
The melody out of music,
The pride out of appearance,
The romance out of love,
The commitment out of marriage,
The responsibility out of parenthood,
The togetherness out of the family,
The learning out of education,
The service out of patriotism,
The religion out of school,
The Golden Rule from rulers,
The nativity scene out of cities,
The civility out of behavior,
The refinement out of language,
The dedication out of employment,
The prudence out of spending, or
The ambition out of achievement,
And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated
patience and tolerance from personal relationships and
interactions with others!!
Does anyone under the age of 50 know the lyrics to the
Star Spangled Banner? Just look at those seniors with
tears in their eyes and pride in their hearts as they stand
at attention with their hand over their hearts! And, unless
many of our younger generation learn to count, in the
absence of computers and calculators, they will be back
to counting on fingers and toes.
Remember.......Inside every older person is a young
person wondering what the heck happened!

New billboards in Ohio, Arkansas, and elsewhere are attributing the
following quotes to ...
... GOD ....
Tell the kids I love them.
Let's meet at my house Sunday before the game.
C'mon over and bring the kids.
What part of "Thou Shalt Not..." didn't you understand?
We need to talk.
Keep using my name in vain, I'll make rush hour longer.
Loved the wedding, invite me to the marriage.
That "Love Thy Neighbor" thing...I meant it.
I love you and you and you and you and...
Will the road you're on get you to my place?
Follow me.
Big bang theory, you've got to be kidding.
My way is the highway.
Need directions?
U-Turns are OK.
You think it's hot here?
Have you read my #1 best seller? There will be a test.
Do you have any idea where you're going?
Don't make me come down there.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED AS YOU'VE GONE THRU LIFE ?
I've learned that I like my teacher because she cries when we sing "Silent Night."
Age 6
I've learned that our dog doesn't want to eat my broccoli either.
Age 7
I've learned that when I wave to people in the country, they stop what
they are doing and wave back.
Age 9
I've learned that if you want to cheer yourself up, you should try
cheering someone else up.
Age 14
I've learned that although it's hard to admit it, I'm secretly glad my
parents are strict with me.
Age 18
I've learned that silent company is often more healing than words of advice.
Age 24
I've learned that brushing my child's hair is one of life's great pleasures.
Age 26
I've learned that wherever I go, the world's worst drivers have followed me there.
Age 29
I've learned that if someone says something unkind about me, I must live
so that no one will believe it.
Age 30
I've learned that there are people who love you dearly but just don't know
how to show it.
Age 42
I've learned that you can make some one's day by simply sending them a
little note.
Age 44
I've learned that the greater a person's sense of guilt, the greater his
or her need to cast blame on others.
Age 46
I've learned that children and grandparents are natural allies.
Age 47
I've learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life
does go on, it will be better tomorrow.
Age 48
I've learned that singing "Amazing Grace" can lift my spirits for hours.
Age 49
I've learned that motel mattresses are better on the side away from the
phone.
Age 50
I've learned that you can tell a lot about a man by he way he handles
these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.
Age 52
I've learned that keeping a vegetable garden is worth a medicine cabinet full of pills.
Age 53
I've learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you
miss them terribly after they die.
Age 55
I've learned that making a living is not the same thing as making a life.
Age 58
I've learned that if you want to do something positive for your children,
work to improve your marriage.
Age 61
I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.
Age 62
I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on
both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.
Age 64
I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you. But if you
focus on your family, the needs of others, your work, meeting new people,
and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you.
Age 65
I've learned that whenever I decide something with kindness, I usually
make the right decision.
Age 66
I've learned that everyone can use a prayer.
Age 72
I've learned that it pays to believe in miracles. And to tell the truth,
I've seen several.
Age 75
I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one.
Age 82
I've learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People
love that human touch, holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.
Age 85
I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.
Age 92

Doctors can be frustrating. You wait a month-and-a-half for an

You read about all these terrorists, most of them came here legally,
but they hang around on these expired visas, some for as long as 10-15

From an Editorial Column somewhere, but author UNconfirmed..
In a move guaranteed to make us feel safer, the Transportation Security Administration announced
that (I couldn't make this up if I wanted to) airport screeners will not be required to have high school diplomas. I wonder what the recruiting posters are going to say?
"Didn't finish 9th grade? Have we got a job for you!"
What about entrance exams? Are they going to have something to do with
Lego'sİ and finger-painting? But wait. There's more. To ensure we never
offend anyone - particularly fanatics intent on killing us - airport
screeners will not be allowed to
profile people. They will continue random searches of 80-year-old women,
little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, Secret Service
agents who are members of the President's security detail and 85-year
old Congressmen with metal hips.
Pause a moment and take the following test ...
1. In 1979, the U.S. embassy in Iran was taken over by:
(a) Norwegians from Ballard;
(b) Elvis;
(c) A tour bus full of 80-year-old women
(d) Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40
2. In 1983, the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut was blown up by:
(a) A pizza delivery boy;
(b) Crazed feminists screeching that being able to throw a grenade beyond
its own burst radius was an unfair and sexist requirement in basic training;
(c) Geraldo Rivera making up for a slow news day; or
(d) Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40
3. In 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was bombed by:
(a) Luca Brazzi, for not being given a part in "Godfather 2;"
(b) The Tooth Fairy;
(c) Butch and Sundance who had a few sticks of dynamite left over from the train thing
(d) Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40
4. In 1998, the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed by:
(a) Mr. Rogers;
(b) Hillary, to distract attention from Wee Willie's women problems;
(c) the WWF, to promote its next villain: "Mustapha the Merciless;"
(d) Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.
5. On 9/11/01, four airliners were hijacked and destroyed by:
(a) Bugs Bunny,
(b) the Supreme Court of Florida trying to outdo their attempted
hijacking of the 2000 Presidential election;
(c) Mr. Bean;
(d) Muslim male extremists mostly between the ages of 17 and 40.
How'd you do? Did you detect a pattern that would indicate we'd better take
a close look at a certain type of individual who might be boarding an
airplane with something on his mind other than "What's the in-flight movie?"
You think so? Horrors! You're nothing more than a closet racist who could
never be hired as an official federal airport screener. So, as it now stands, we have the
Transportation Security Administration trying to improve the professionalism of airport screeners by lowering standards and forbidding the use of common sense in screening people. Makes sense, right? Right.

From Elsewhere in the Media.........
"I think the vast differences in compensation between the victims of the
September 11th casualty, and those who die serving the country in uniform,
are profound. No one is really talking about it either because you just
don't criticize anything having to do with September 11th. Well, I just
can't let the numbers pass by because it says something really disturbing
about the entitlement mentality of this country.
If you lost a family member in the September 11th attack, you're going to
get an average of $1,185,000. The range is a minimum guarantee of $250,000,
all the way up to $4.7 million. If you are a surviving family member of an
American soldier killed in action, the first check you get is a $6,000
direct death benefit, half of which is taxable. Next, you get $1,750 for
burial costs. If you are the surviving spouse, you get $833 a month until
you remarry. And there's a payment of $211 per month for each child under
18. When the child hits 18, those payments come to a screeching halt.
Keep in mind that some of the people that are getting an average of $1.185
million up to $4.7 million are complaining that it's not enough.
We also learned over the weekend that some of the victims from the Oklahoma
City bombing have started an organization asking for the same deal that the
September 11th families are getting. In addition to that, some of the
families of those bombed in the embassies are now asking for compensation
as well. You see where this is going, don't you?
Folks, this is part and parcel of over fifty years of entitlement politics
in this country. It's just really sad.
"Patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotion but the
tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime." --Adlai E. Stevenson, Jr.
Every time when a pay raise comes up for the military they usually receive
next to nothing of a raise. Now the green machine is in combat in the
Middle East while their families have to survive on food stamps and live in low
rent housing. However our own U.S. Congress just voted themselves a raise,
and many of you don't know that they only have to be in Congress one-time
to receive a pension that is more than $15,000 per month and most are now
equal to be millionaires plus. They also do not receive Social Security on
retirement because they didn't have to pay into the system.
If some of the military people stay in for 20 years and get out as an E-7
you may receive a pension of $1,000 per month, and the very people who
placed you in harms way receive a pension of $15,000 per month. I would
like to see our elected officials pick up a weapon and join ranks before they
start cutting out benefits and lowering pay for our sons and daughters who
are now fighting."

The "Buffalo Theory" -- an explanation from Cliff to Norm on Cheers...
"Well you see, Norm, it's like this...A herd of buffalo can only move as
fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest
and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection
is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the
whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the
slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain
cells.
But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In
this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells,
making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.
And that, Normy, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

The old Marmac's restaurant just east of the s.e. cor. of Florence and Lakewood,
which as I recall opened in the (possibly late) 50's and which flourished for years as
an all-you-can-eat salad and prime rib buffet, fell on hard time some years back and for
a while operated with various international themes until it was closed for a long period.
It is now undergoing a large remodeling project and will open as the Downey Pizza company.
The old Bob O'Leary Buick operated on the s.e. cor. of Firestone and Downey relocated
1-block east to Firestone and Dolan many years back and was bought by the Simpson family.
Eventually they took-on the Oldsmobile franchise when Nowling's closed down on Firestone
just e. of OldRiver School Road and finally relocated the whole thing to Buena Park a few
years ago. The vacant property (which included the site of the old Downey Bowling Lanes)
is now a construction site for a new CVS Pharmacy and a HomeTown Buffet; the latter will
be across the street from a Denny's (formerly a Kings -- owned and operated by Mickey King),
a Mimi's Cafe, and Gregory's -- the dining room in the Embassy Suites.
Observing the competition should be interesting.
In my earliest days here beginning in 1943 the area was served by a branch of the
L.A.County Library located in a small building just n. of the cor. of DowneyAve. and
3rd St. (the corner being occupied by the Miller-Mies Mortuary, which failed to survive
the Whittier quake of ??); the Librarian was Eliz.Bryson - the wife of the Postmaster
JohnBryson. In time it moved to larger quarters on the s.w. cor. of 3-rd and New Streets
and was replaced by Downey Stationers owned and operated by a lady named "Tommy" Thompson.
When the City incorporated in 1956 they made a quick deal for a portion of the stationery
store for a tiny City Library and the next year built the current facility on the s.e.
cor. of 3-rd St and Brookshire Ave (formerly Church St.). When I dropped by last week for
some books on a new PC operating system, I noticed the 45-year old plaque on the wall listing
the Library Board members at the time; among them were Merritt Yancey, Scott Temple, and
Joe Coss - the latter of whom was the Principal of Downey Elementary in my last year there
-- having succeeded Spencer Valentine Williams for whom an Elementary school was later named.
When I graduated from Downey Union High School, there were 4 Elementary Districts whose
graduates came to the School; Clifford Shambaugh was the Superintendent of the District,
which included the Junior Highs -- South and North (and eventually East and West, but the
exact timing escapes me). In time these 5 Districts merged into the Downey Unified School
District; the first Superintendent after unification was Bruce Moore; he was followed by
Manuel Gallegos and then by Ed Sussman who has held the job for 17 years and will retire
as of June of 2003. Last year the Board renamed South Junior High after him.
Some of you, especially the girls (many of whom were members), will remember Bethel 17
of the International Order of Job's Daughters; eventually it sprang a new Bethel #244,
which is now celebrating its 100-th installation this Sat 14 Dec 2002. See more at ...

In closing let me note --
NotreDame - 13, USC - 44
it has nothing to do with Downey, but I just like seeing it in print.
Old age is when former classmates are so gray and wrinkled and bald,
that they don't recognize you.
